96 VW Jetta trunk release button doesn't work. It wont even budge. How do I fix it?

I have a 96 Vw jetta, the lock on the outside quit working yesterday, other than crawling through my back seat, I can't get in my trunk. The trunk release button doesn't work, never has. I try and push it and the button has no play in it at all. I'd rather fix the inside button. I don't want to mess with the outside button at all unless its free to fix. Can anyone tell me how to make the inside trunk release button work so I can get into the trunk of my car? I have a child, and I take the stroller in and out of the trunk all the time. NEED IT TO OPEN!
