Parents: How "pedestrian friendly" is your town?

Mine is NOT. I take walks with my 14 month old in his stroller a lot and our town is severely missing in sidewalks and the drivers don't understand about basic traffic laws of crosswalks and signaling turns. Is it a common problem for small town USA or is my town particularly bad about this?
